What is an Aneurysm?

Aneurysms happen when one portion of an artery wall weakens, making it balloon out or abnormally widen. Its causes are often unknown. Some may be congenital, meaning a person was born with them. Conditions like aortic disease or an injury can also cause an aneurysm.

A family history of aneurysm may also increase a person’s risk for developing it. Other common risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.

Aneurysms can occur anywhere, but the most common places to experience them are:

  • Aortic aneurysm occurs in the major artery from the heart
  • Cerebral aneurysm occurs in the brain
  • Mesenteric artery aneurysm occurs in the intestine
  • Popliteal artery aneurysm occurs in the leg behind the knee
  • Splenic artery aneurysm occurs in an artery in the spleen
